Mullvad Browser is a privacy-focused browser developed in collaboration between Mullvad VPN and the Tor Project. Based on Firefox, it is designed to minimize tracking and fingerprinting, offering an alternative to Tor Browser for use with a trusted VPN instead of the Tor network. Launched in April 2023, it is free and open source.
Its main goal is to protect user privacy by reducing data collection by websites and third parties. To achieve this, it standardizes settings for all users, creating a similar digital profile among them, making individual identification more difficult. Features include private mode enabled by default (not saving cookies, cache, or history between sessions), blocking of trackers and third-party cookies, and strong anti-fingerprinting protections inherited from the Tor Project, such as font masking, hardware API masking, and window dimensions (letterboxing).
The browser comes with pre-installed extensions, such as uBlock Origin for ad blocking and the Mullvad VPN extension for integration with the company's service, although it works with any VPN or without one. It does not collect telemetry, reflecting its business model that does not aim to profit from user data but rather to complement Mullvad's VPN service. It has three security levels (Standard, More Secure, and Even More Secure), adjustable as needed, and an "identity reset" button to clear session data with a click.
While it is excellent for everyday privacy against corporate surveillance, it does not offer the same level of anonymity as the Tor network against more advanced threats, such as governments.
